Starting January 1, 2026, we’re replacing credits with Makeup Tokens—a simpler, fairer way to make up missed classes.

Minisport Make-Up Tokens: What’s Changing from 5 January 2026

Instead of quietly slipping this into our terms and conditions or sending a long, text‑heavy email that’s hard to digest, we want to explain this change clearly and openly. Our intention is to benefit families with this new policy, not to surprise anyone or spring changes on you that you weren’t aware of.

In our previous version of this blog post, issued in late October, we said we would provide an update to the proposed changes in December. We are now issuing this updated and final version on 20 November so that families have even more notice about the policy changes coming into effect in the new year.

This policy applies to Minisport programmes in both Hong Kong and Singapore.

From 5 January 2026, Minisport is moving fully from financial credit to Make-Up Tokens for missed classes and camps.

1. What Make-Up Tokens Are and How Long They Last

If you only read one section, make it this one.

Until now

  • If your child missed a class, you received financial credit (usually at the discounted rate you paid) with 90 days’ validity, which you could use against future enrolments.
  • In practice, this often meant either:
    • Topping up significantly to pay for a premium‑priced $480 drop-in (priced higher because it is a flexible, last‑minute spot), or
    • Waiting weeks or even months until new courses were released to actually use the credit.

From 5 January 2026

  • Missed classes and camps will give you Make-Up Tokens, not financial credit.
  • 1 token = 1 hour of class or camp time.
  • Tokens can be used to book:
    • Public drop-in classes, and
    • Drop-in camp days (you just need enough tokens to cover the full length of the camp).
  • Tokens are immediately usable once granted, so families can usually make up a missed class within days, not weeks or months.
  • Make-ups are highly flexible: you can use tokens on any day of the week, with any coach, at any Minisport venue across our seven‑day schedule.
    • The only prerequisite is that the make-up class is in the correct age group for your child.

Validity rules (critical)

  • New make‑up tokens (for missed sessions on or after 5 January 2026)
    • Each new token has a 28‑day (4‑week) validity, counted from the date of the missed session.
    • Example: if your child misses a class on 10 March, the token can be used up to and including 7 April (28 days later).
    • If you notify us in advance (e.g. on 1 April for a class on 14 April, with a valid reason and approval), the token will still expire 28 days after 14 April (i.e. 12 May), which in practice gives you around six weeks from the time you notify us to use the make-up. This favours parents who give advance notice.
  • Existing credit as of 4 January 2026
    • All existing credit that is still valid on 4 January 2026 will be converted into tokens and given a fresh 90‑day validity from 5 January 2026.
    • This means everyone’s existing credit is significantly extended, and we also round up token amounts in your favour.

There is no limit to how many make-up tokens you can have in your account, but the expiry rules above always apply.

2. At a Glance: What’s Changing vs What’s Staying the Same

What’s changing

  • Financial credit → Make-Up Tokens for missed sessions.
  • New make-ups from 5 January 2026:
    • Tokens have 28‑day validity from the missed session date.
  • The old “30% partial credit” (for absences notified 72 hours in advance without supporting documents) will end on 6 January 2026, as partial tokens cannot be issued.

What’s staying the same

  • Our very flexible absence policy for:
    • Advance notice of birthdays, travel, school events, and
    • Sickness with supporting documents uploaded to the app.
  • The ability to make up on any day, with any coach, at any venue, as long as the age group is suitable.
  • Our commitment to:
    • Small classes,
    • High‑quality coaching, and
    • Term‑long development for each child.

3. Why We’re Making This Change

  1. Development first
    • To develop well, children need to be in a consistent rhythm, ideally averaging one class per week.
    • The new system encourages timely make-ups rather than long, open-ended balances that sit unused months after the original class.
  2. Simplicity and fairness
    • Parents have repeatedly asked for a clearer, more direct make-up system.
    • Tokens are easier to understand: you see exactly how many hours of sport you can still claim, and you can usually use them quickly.
    • Missed classes now result in actual make-up sessions, not just a need to top up to attend a $480 drop-in.

4. What Happens to Existing Credit on 4 January 2026?

This is where the change is especially favourable to parents.

On 4 January 2026:

  • Every dollar of valid credit in your account will be converted into tokens.
  • We will use a simple HK$→token rate and round up in your favour.
    • Example: If our rate is HK$300 per token and you have HK$700 credit, you will receive 3 tokens, not 2.33.

On 5 January 2026:

  • All of those migrated tokens (from existing credit) will get a fresh 90-day validity from that date.

So, for example:

  • If you earned credit in October 2025, under the old system it might have expired around January 2026.
  • Under the new system, that same value:
    • Is converted into tokens,
    • Rounded up where needed, and
    • Is now valid until early April 2026 (90 days after 5 January).

In other words, all credit that is still valid on 4 January 2026 is effectively extended and made easier to use.

These rules apply to all sessions missed on or before 4 January 2026 under the current credit system. Sessions missed on or after 5 January 2026 follow the new token rules described above.

5. Camps: How Tokens Are Awarded and Used

Camps are longer, so we handle them on an hourly basis.

When a camp session is missed

  • 1 token = 1 hour of camp time.
  • We round up when awarding tokens:
    • 1.0 hour missed → 1 token
    • 1.5 hours missed → 2 tokens
    • 2.0 hours missed → 2 tokens
    • 2.5 hours missed → 3 tokens

When using tokens on drop-in camps

  • You need enough tokens to cover the full rounded-up duration of the camp day.
  • Example:
    • A 1.5-hour camp requires 2 tokens to book using make-ups.
    • If you don’t have 2 tokens, you can still join by paying the full drop-in fee instead of using tokens.

6. Our Absence Policy: Still Extremely Flexible

We are not tightening our approach to legitimate absences. We will continue to honour our already very flexible policy for client-initiated absences when:

  • You inform us in advance of:
    • Birthdays
    • Travel
    • School events
  • Or your child is sick and you upload a supporting document (e.g. doctor’s note) to the app.

In all of these cases:

  • Your request is reviewed and approved by our admin team, and
  • You will receive make-up tokens instead of financial credit.

The key change is format and timing, not our willingness to support families with genuine reasons for absence.

7. If You’re Affected by This Change

We know any change to a long-standing policy can raise questions.

  • These updates are being implemented in response to continual requests for make-ups, and to make sure missed classes now result in real make-up sessions, not just a need to top up to attend a $480 drop-in.
  • At the same time, we are extending and rounding up existing credit in January to ensure families are treated fairly and, in many cases, better than before.

If you feel this change creates a genuine disadvantage for your family (for example, due to unusual medical or travel circumstances), please contact us. We will review individual cases and do our best to find a fair, child‑centred solution.

If you feel you are significantly affected or have specific concerns about your family’s situation, please reach out to our team. We will always do our best to support you and to make sure the system works in a way that is fair, transparent, and aligned with your child’s development.

Beyond the Scoreboard: How Character Badges Are Transforming Children’s Sports Development

One simple shift in the way you talk to your child after sport can transform your relationship and their results. Most parents run the same script: “Did you have fun?” Minisport’s Character Badges give you a new campaign of conversations—specific, behaviour-based questions that build self-awareness, resilience and ownership. Over weeks and terms, these micro-conversations become a relationship system: you’re no longer reacting to random outcomes, you’re co-creating your child’s development journey. If you had precise weekly insights on your child’s character, how different would your post-class conversations sound?
